FeatureMatch™: Reading a Slot Through Its Features
The basic slot game is simple, but its special features give each title a different character. FeatureMatch™ organizes scattered feature information into a shared framework, giving readers a starting point for understanding each game.
A simple game with many variations
At its core, a slot is a simple game of matching symbols to win. Wilds can change combinations, scatters can open the way to a bonus, and multipliers or respins can reshape a round. The features a game includes, and how they work together, give us clues about the experience it offers.
That information is scattered. Studios use different names for similar mechanics, combine several effects under one feature name, and introduce new mechanics that do not fit familiar categories. They also describe features in different ways. Names and promotional descriptions alone make games hard to compare.
Turning scattered features into a shared framework
SlotWise reviews each game’s rules and feature descriptions, then identifies and classifies special features by how they work rather than by their names. When a named feature combines several effects, we examine those effects separately. We map the findings to shared categories while explaining how each mechanic works in its own game, with feature guides and interactive demos available to readers.
As of October 10, 2026, we have cataloged 235 special features across 4,882 slots. Most widely used mechanics are already represented, and we continue to add features unique to individual games. This work lets us organize a game’s features into six functional roles and build the profile shown in Preview.
Six functional roles
| Role | What it describes |
|---|---|
| Symbol changes | Changes to symbols, reels, or collector behavior that affect how combinations are formed. |
| Win amplification | Mechanics that increase wins or symbol values. |
| Direct prizes | Prizes awarded separately from ordinary symbol combinations. |
| Persistence & growth | Symbols, values, or progress that carry over or grow across evaluations or spins. |
| Extra plays | Further evaluations, respins, or additional spins. |
| Bonus modes | Mechanics tied to phases of play with distinct rules. |
Reading the profile
Each bar's number shows how many features contribute to that role. A single feature can contribute to more than one role. For example, Sticky Wild performs wild substitution and also remains in place across later evaluations or spins, so it contributes to both Symbol changes and Persistence & growth.
Bar lengths are scaled to the largest count within each game. The longest bar marks the role with the most features in that game; it does not indicate a maximum score. When comparing games, look at the numbers as well as the bar lengths. Selecting a role shows the features included in its count.
The summary describes the pattern in these counts. A game may have one or two prominent roles, or its features may be spread fairly evenly across roles. These notes describe the roles the features represent, not how often they trigger.
Feature count and composition
Alongside the six-role profile, we consider the number and composition of the special features counted. Two games with the same number of features may feel very different: one may focus on variations within a single feature family, while another combines several families. More features do not automatically make a better game. What matters is which mechanics appear and how they work together.
Basic win structures and betting options may be explained on the page without being included in the special feature count. Game-specific mechanics may be counted and also described separately from the shared six-role profile. The count is therefore not a rating of quality or a measure of how complex a game will feel in play.
FeatureMatch™ and 300SPINS™
With dozens of new slots appearing each day, it is difficult to play and evaluate every game in depth. FeatureMatch™ provides a common basis for analysis, allowing Preview to examine games consistently even when they have no 300-spin review. It also gives readers a starting point for deciding what to look at more closely.
300SPINS™ records observations and results from a 300-spin session we played. A feature listed in the rules may never appear in that particular session. FeatureMatch™ describes what a game is built to do; 300SPINS™ describes what happened in recorded play.
